The Indigenous Family Counsellor provides a variety of parenting education and supportive interventions that promote healthier family functioning primarily to Indigenous families to reduce risk factors, maintain safety and increase well-being. The Counsellor provides support to families in goal planning and utilizes a range of strategies, community resources, and support network to help address risks identified. We encourage Aboriginal, Metis, Inuit and First Nations peoples to apply.

The Family Counsellors will: 

  • Provide counselling, parent-education and support interventions directly to families and children. 
  • Conduct direct case management activities; including an assessment of family issues, supporting family visits, parent-education skill development, and utilization of community resources.
  • Promote the protection and well-being of children in their home through expedient, time-specific, flexible interventions.
  • Develop and implement a counselling, support and intervention plan in collaboration with the family and their ICM team.
  • Provide culturally competent service to a diverse range of clients.
  • Promote strategies and support to prevent out-of-home placement of a child, in the family home or in the community, as appropriate.
  • Respond immediately to support the family at the point of crisis. 
  • Enhance family and community support network, particularly in concrete needs, such as housing, health, or education.
  • Co-facilitate parent education and family/children support programs and workshops.
  • Work with families with diverse cultural backgrounds. 
  • Work with at-risk and marginalized families within the community.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with all professionals involved in the care of the individuals
  • Ensures that all records, reports, and documentation pertaining to service delivery are accurate, complete and in compliance with WFC’s policies and procedures. 
  • Liaise as appropriate with other agencies/professionals for purposes of consultation.
  • Conduct other duties as required. 

What you bring to WFC: 

  • Relevant MA with 3 years’ experience or relevant BA with 5 years’ experience preferred.
  • Understanding and knowledge of familial and social issues affecting Aboriginal families, including but not limited to intergenerational trauma, colonialism and residential schools, traditional wellness and healing practices and culture as therapy.
  • Experience working with families who may present multiple service needs related to poverty, addictions, violence, child abuse or neglect, and mental health issues.
  • Strong counselling, program planning, and communication skills
  • An understanding of integrated case management
  • Knowledge of Computer operating systems
  • Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated experience in the Family Preservation Program, and work experience with Indigenous families.  

Working conditions:

  • Family-friendly culture and environment. 
  • May be required to work evenings and/or weekends.
  • Current First Aid, Class 5 Driver’s License and use of own car required.
  • Maintain current First Aid and Non-Violent crisis intervention certificate.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check and Drivers Abstract.
